Anthony Arnove - end Iraq occupation now

Friday, January 26th, 2007

This program, with ANTHONY ARNOVE, author of Iraq: The Logic of Withdrawal, was held at the University of Illinois at Chicago on January 20, 2007. (JEFF ENGLEHART of Iraq Veterans Against the War also spoke, and will appear in a separate video.)

You may also download the audio of both of the speaker presentations - 49:45 minutes; mp3 audio download, playing at 64 kbps mono.

The November elections showed the growing sentiment against the war and occupation of Iraq. But the release of the bipartisan Iraq Study Group report shows no sign of actually ending the occupation. Even if all its proposals are followed, the U.S. will only cause more death and suffering in Iraq.

About the speakers:

JEFF ENGLEHART is a member of Iraq Veterans Against the War. While in Iraq, he became an outspoken opponent of the war, communicating along with several fellow soldiers through the internet as the bloggers, hEkLe, Heretic and Joe Public.

ANTHONY ARNOVE is the author of Iraq: The Logic of Withdrawal. He is also a member of the editorial board of the International Socialist Review, and co-editor with Howard Zinn of Voices of a People’s History of the United States.

The International Socialist Organization sponsored this forum.

Target Iran: The Truth about the White House Plans for Regime Change –Today’s discussion?
—————————————————————————————————————-

PUT THE BRAKES ON WAR WITH IRAN

“Not only did the President single out Iran (four times, according to an NPR commentator), but I heard no rebuttals from members of Congress regarding the threat of US war against Iran, with one exception aired by international media. This speech raises the rhetoric of accusations against Iran. We should be quite aware: Congress is NOT READY to put the brakes on the next war! They only have only begun sounding an alarm about current massacres. That’s far too late. How will we put the brakes on in advance of massacres?

The President also proposed “a civilian reserve corps … giving civilians a chance to serve in the defining struggle of our times.” Perhaps more corporate mercenaries are on the way, not bound by sworn oaths to the constitution, or treaties among nations. (’… A ‘Blade Runner’ future?’ asked Ronald Steel, author of Temptations of a Superpower (1995) at Amherst College, on Jan. 21.) (more…)

DEMOCRATIC CONGRESSIONAL LEADERSHIP COOPERATES
WITH THE BUSH EXPANSION OF THE IRAQ-IRAN WAR

-   Woolsey and Nadler Bills Most Forceful but Likely to Die Without
Massive Grassroots Pressure

By Nick Mottern, Director, ConsumersforPeace.org

In spite of protestations about the Bush Administration’s hike in troop levels in Iraq, the Democratic Congressional leadership is essentially cooperating through inaction with the escalation and the expansion of the war in Iraq and the opening of the war against Iran. (more…)
